Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Yosemite Valley walking tour

  • Start at Echo Adventure Basecamp
  • Visit Yosemite Falls and Tunnel View
  • See Bridalveil Falls and Half Dome
  • Explore El Capitan and other landmarks
  • Return to Echo Adventure Basecamp

“You ever see a rock so big it makes you feel like an ant?” That’s what I blurted out when we first stepped into Yosemite Valley. Our guide, Sarah, just grinned—she’s probably heard that a thousand times but didn’t make me feel silly. The air was cool and sharp in the morning, almost piney, and you could hear the Merced River before you saw it. We piled out of the van at Echo Adventure’s basecamp (Groveland’s got this sleepy small-town vibe), grabbed our steel bottles—they hand those out so you don’t have to worry about plastic—and set off.

I thought three miles would be easy. It’s not hard exactly, but every few minutes I stopped just to stare—at Yosemite Falls roaring down (the spray actually hit my face from way across), or at El Capitan catching this weird golden light. Sarah pointed out climbers on the wall—tiny dots moving up the granite—and told us stories about how long people camp up there. Someone in our group tried to pronounce “Bridalveil” in Spanish and totally butchered it; even Sarah laughed. There was this moment by Tunnel View where everything went quiet except for some ravens overhead. I still think about that silence.

Lunch was just snacks today (unless you book the winter option), but honestly, after seeing Half Dome looming over us and dipping my fingers in the cold river water, food wasn’t really on my mind. The walk isn’t hard if you’re moderately fit—though my knees did complain a bit on one rocky bit near Royal Arches. We finished back at basecamp around 3pm, kind of tired but mostly dazed—in a good way. I kept glancing back as we drove out; it’s one of those places that sort of lingers with you longer than expected.
