The experience
You start at the trailhead with a game called Forest Forensics that teaches you to read nature's clues the way a naturalist does: tracks in the grass, the tree line, how water shapes the land. The guide then walks you through the story of Half Dome, built millions of years ago beneath the earth by forces you can see in the granite face now. You'll hear the native legends attached to these cliffs, stories of bravery and persistence that shaped how people understood this place long before it became a national park.
The walk moves through one of Yosemite's iconic meadows, where you can see why the valley floor is a life support system for wildlife and why it draws visitors today. From there you reach Yosemite Falls, and the guide teaches you to spot the optical illusion that makes the tallest waterfall in North America look strange when you study it closely. You walk right to the base, where the roar is loud enough that you feel the power of the water, not just see it. The guide shows your group a trick you can play with the rushing water once you understand how it works.
The whole walk takes 3 hours, which means you can fit it into a morning or early afternoon and still have time for other parts of the park. Trekking poles are provided, and the guide carries the vehicle permit you need to be in the park. The step count is around 6,283, so you'll want a moderate level of fitness. The terrain is not wheelchair accessible.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 11 years). Under 5: they can't be included in the booking.
What is Half Dome and why does the guide spend time explaining it?
Half Dome is the massive granite cliff that dominates Yosemite Valley. The guide explains how it was forged millions of years ago beneath the earth through glacial action, and shares the native legends about what these cliffs meant to the people who lived here first: stories of bravery and persistence tied to one of nature's smallest creatures.
What happens at Yosemite Falls during the tour?
You walk to the base of the tallest waterfall in North America and feel its roar up close. The guide teaches you an optical illusion about how the waterfall looks when you stare at it, and shows your group a trick you can play with the rushing water once you understand the illusion.
How does the Forest Forensics game work at the start?
Forest Forensics is a nature game that breaks the ice between travelers and teaches you to read nature's clues like a naturalist: reading tracks, grass, and the tree line to understand how the landscape works. It connects you with other people on the tour while you learn to observe the valley like an expert.
What do I need to bring, and what's included in the tour?
Trekking poles are provided, along with the vehicle permit required to be in the park. You'll need to bring water and snacks if you want them during the walk. Food and drinks are not included. Wear sturdy shoes and bring layers, as weather in the valley changes through the day.
Is there a National Park entrance fee I need to pay?
The tour includes a vehicle permit for the park. If you're a U.S. resident, standard park entrance fees may apply. If you're an international visitor, an additional entrance fee of $100 per person is collected when you arrive, not at the time of booking.
