The Experience
“You see that line up there?” our guide, Miguel, pointed at El Capitan’s sheer wall as we pulled over. “That’s where the climbers sleep: right on the rock.” I squinted through the van window, half-expecting to spot someone dangling up there. The drive from San Francisco had been quiet: foggy near the Bay, then clearing as we wound into the Sierra foothills. I remember opening my window for a second just to smell pine and something almost metallic in the air. Miguel chatted about Yosemite’s history, but he also told us which gas station coffee not to trust along Highway 120 (he was right).
I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in Tuolumne Grove among those giant sequoias. The bark felt cool and rough under my palm: sort of like old leather. There were only a few other people around, mostly families whispering or laughing quietly so their voices wouldn’t echo too much. Later at Tunnel View, everyone got out of the van without saying anything for a while. It’s hard to talk when you’re looking at Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall all lined up in front of you. There was this faint sound of water somewhere below, almost hidden by wind through the trees.
Lunch was just sandwiches from a local shop, eaten on a log near the Merced River. My hands smelled like sunscreen and bread. We stopped at The Ahwahnee too: Miguel insisted we peek inside (“Best fireplace in California,” he said). He waved at an older woman reading by the window. She nodded back like she’d seen it all before. I still think about that lounge: how quiet it felt even with people moving around.
