The Experience

“You’re not gonna believe this,” our guide grinned as we rounded another bend—he’d been saying that all morning, but somehow it never got old. We’d left Fresno before sunrise, still rubbing sleep from our eyes, and by the time we hit Tunnel View, that sleepy feeling was gone. The valley just opened up in front of us—El Capitan on one side, Bridalveil Falls misting in the distance. There was this faint piney smell in the air (I kept trying to describe it and gave up). Our group was just two other couples—quiet at first, but after someone cracked a joke about their hiking shoes we all loosened up.

I didn’t expect to get so much out of having a local guide—he pointed out where Roosevelt and John Muir camped (there’s a little plaque I almost missed), and knew which trails were muddy from last week’s rain. At Glacier Point, the wind picked up and my hat nearly flew off—Li caught it for me, laughing. The view from up there…well, you’ll see. It’s weird how silent it feels even with people around. We skipped some of the bigger crowds because our van could pull over where buses can’t; felt like cheating a bit.

Lunch at the Ahwahnee Hotel felt fancy without being stuffy—the dining room has these huge windows and I kept staring out at the trees instead of my sandwich (turkey for me; someone else tried the Indian vegetarian option and said it was way better than they expected). If you do the 4-Mile Trail hike instead, they pack you a picnic so you don’t miss out. I still think about that moment after lunch when sunlight hit the stone walls just right—it made everything look softer somehow. Not sure if it was just tiredness or something else but I didn’t want to leave yet.
