The experience
You arrive at Lenka's home kitchen in Park City and spend the next two hours making two pastries from scratch: kolaches (sweet and savory breakfast pastries) and babka (a sweet braided bread with Jewish roots). This is hands-on work. You're not watching a demonstration. You'll shape the dough, fill it with fillings like poppy seed paste, walnut paste, cheese, chocolate, jam, ajvar or sauerkraut, and bake your own batch. Lenka guides you through her family recipes, the ones she learned from her grandmother starting at age eight, and shares the traditions and stories woven into Slovak and Eastern European baking as you work.
The class is built around what you actually make and eat. After the baking is done, you sit down together to taste the kolaches and babka you helped prepare: the result of your work, still warm. Lenka speaks English and can adjust for dietary needs: let her know if you need the class vegetarian, vegan or lactose-free when you book. The kitchen is a home kitchen, not a professional one, which is the whole point. You're learning in the space where these recipes live, not in a commercial setup.
You'll choose lunch or dinner as part of your booking, so the timing fits your day in Park City. Public transportation options are nearby if you need them. Infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller.
