The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the trees looked—like they’d been there forever, draped in moss so thick it almost swallowed the light. We’d just left Seattle behind, coffee still warm in my hands (from this funky shop in Aberdeen that also sells paintings—our guide Max knew the owner). Someone mentioned Kurt Cobain grew up around here, and suddenly we were standing under a bridge with his name scrawled on it. Not what I expected at all, but it made sense somehow.

Driving into the Quinault Rainforest felt like entering another country—everything was green and dripping and alive. The air smelled sharp, wet bark and something sweet I couldn’t place. Max pointed out these ferns that looked prehistoric; I tripped over a root and he laughed, said it happens to everyone. We stopped at this old lodge by Lake Quinault where FDR once stayed—view was glassy blue with mountains reflected perfectly except for one duck paddling through. I think I could’ve sat there for hours if we didn’t have more ground to cover.

Ruby Beach wasn’t crowded—just driftwood everywhere and these giant rocks jutting out of the fog. The Pacific wind hit hard; I got sand in my shoes but didn’t care. Some folks tried skipping stones, others just stared at the waves like they were hypnotized. Lunch was in Forks (yes, that Twilight town), nothing fancy but the burger tasted better than it should after a morning outside. Later we walked through the Hall of Mosses—honestly, it’s hard to describe how quiet it felt except for our footsteps and maybe a raven overhead.

The ferry ride back across Puget Sound caught me off guard—the city skyline coming into view with gulls riding the wind beside us. Max handed out craft chocolate bars (I picked pistachio) and someone joked about moving out here for good. I still think about that stretch of rainforest light sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home—you know?
