The Experience

You'll meet at one of several Seattle pickup points (MoPop, Seattle Public Library, Urban Coffeehouse or Matt Griffin YMCA) and ride out in a mini-coach with large windows and climate control. The drive itself passes through the mountain town of Elbe before entering the park, and what happens next depends entirely on the season and what the road opens that day. Summer tours (mid-April through mid-October) showcase old-growth forests, wildflower-filled meadows and waterfalls; winter tours concentrate around Longmire, the original park headquarters, where you'll get complimentary snowshoes if conditions allow. Your guide will route the day to show as much of the park as possible given the weather and accessibility.

Longmire is a stop on every tour—a chance for restrooms, short walks and photos at the museum and Wilderness Information Center. Mid-April through mid-October, you'll also stop to see waterfalls, with some tours hiking down to the lower falls when weather permits. The Visitor Center is another regular stop where you can eat at the cafe, bring your own picnic lunch, or buy one at a grocery store stop along the way (your own expense). In peak season (July and August), tours may pull over at a reflection lake for the postcard shot of Mt. Rainier mirrored in still water—though this stop is not guaranteed. Tipsoo Lake, a subalpine lake higher in the park, appears on some tours. Sunrise is a rare stop possible only in July and early September.

Bring layered clothing because mountain temperatures swing from rainy and cold to sunny and hot in a single day. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, though hikes and walks are entirely optional—you can stay on the bus or walk as much as you want. The tour runs 9 to 11 hours with pickup and drop-off, and the route can shift if traffic or ongoing construction delays the day. A cooler with ice stays on the bus to keep perishables cold. Children from age 5 can join; the tour operates in all weather, so dress for whatever the mountain throws at you.
