The Experience

We almost missed the start because I’d mixed up the pickup spot—classic me. Our guide, Sam, just grinned and waved us over when we finally spotted the van outside our hotel. Pike Place Market was next and honestly, it’s more chaotic than I expected—in a good way. We squeezed past a guy juggling lemons (he dropped one; nobody cared), then Sam pointed out where to find the best smoked salmon. I tried a sample and yeah, it was salty and rich and lingered for ages after. There’s this smell—a mix of flowers, brine, and something sweet like cinnamon rolls—that kind of clings to your jacket after you leave. The Sky View Observatory was optional but I’m glad we went up—seeing Seattle from that high up made everything feel smaller but also more connected? Hard to explain. The Space Needle was packed outside (we didn’t go up) but people still stopped for photos under those spiky legs anyway. Chihuly Garden and Glass was another optional stop; even if you don’t go inside, you can see wild colors through the windows—like someone spilled sunlight on glass. We drove past Pioneer Square too fast for my liking; I caught a glimpse of brick arches and thought about coming back later on my own.

I didn’t expect to geek out at the Museum of Flight but there’s something about seeing an old Boeing up close that makes you feel like a kid again—Sam told us stories about pilots who trained there during WWII. The tour isn’t rigid; if something’s closed or traffic is wild (it was), they just adjust without fussing over it. By the end my feet hurt but in that good way where you know you actually saw things instead of just reading plaques.
