The experience
We’d barely sat down on the mini coach before our guide, Jamie, started pointing out things I’d have missed on my own: like the old brickwork peeking through at Pioneer Square, or how you can smell coffee even before you see Pike Place Market. There was this low Seattle drizzle that morning, but honestly it just made the neon signs and umbrellas pop more. I kept trying to snap photos through the window, but half of them are just streaks of rain (kind of love those though).
Jamie had this habit of tossing out little stories as we drove past places, apparently the Fremont Troll has its own holiday? And when we stopped at Ballard Locks, we caught this moment where a fisherman waved up at us from his boat. The salmon ladder was louder than I expected: water rushing and some kid nearby yelling “look!” every time a fish jumped. We didn’t linger long anywhere, but there was enough time to grab a coffee in Pioneer Square (the barista called me “hon”, which felt very Seattle somehow).
The city skyline from Kerry Park really did something to me: clouds rolling over the Space Needle, ferries gliding by below. It’s not like I haven’t seen photos online before, but standing there with strangers who all went quiet for a second… well, it sticks with you. Oh and driving past the Amazon Spheres. They look even weirder in person. By the end, Jamie offered to drop us off at the Space Needle or take us back downtown. I wandered off on my own after that. Still thinking about those rain-streaked windows and how much more alive Seattle felt after three hours than it ever did on Google Maps.
