Kanab: Peekaboo Slot Canyon & Great Chamber UTV TourFeel the red dust, explore Peekaboo Slot Canyon, hike to the Great Chamber near Kanab, and drive your own UTV with a local guide—includes water and gear.★ 4.94 (135)3h 30mUS$ 499View › I still laugh thinking about how I almost lost my shoe in the sand at the start of our hike near Kanab. We’d just bounced along a dirt road with our guide, Tom, who seemed to know every bump by name. The air was dry but not too hot yet—just that faint smell of sagebrush and dust. Our small group (eight of us, plus Tom) started out toward the Great Chamber first. Climbing up that sandy hill was harder than it looked—my legs burned in a way I didn’t expect, but nobody rushed. Someone joked about needing a ski lift for sand.
At the top, the Great Chamber just sort of appeared—like someone had scooped out half a mountain and left this enormous glowing alcove behind. Sunlight poured in at an angle that made everything look golden and soft. Tom explained how it’s taken thousands of years for wind to carve out this spot; honestly, it felt like standing inside a giant hourglass. I tried to take pictures but ended up just staring for a while instead. The silence up there is different—kind of thick, if that makes sense.
After catching our breath (and shaking sand out of my socks), we headed over to Peekaboo Slot Canyon. It’s only about ten miles north of Kanab, but it feels like another planet once you step inside those narrow walls. The light kept changing as we walked through—reds turning pink then orange depending on where you stood. Tom pointed out little details I would’ve missed: tiny animal tracks, weird rock patterns that looked like waves frozen in stone. He handed around granola bars and water when we stopped for photos—which was often because honestly, you can’t help it here.
I didn’t expect to feel so small or so calm at the same time. There’s something about walking between those sandstone walls with just a handful of people and hearing nothing but your own footsteps echoing back at you. Even now I catch myself thinking about that last patch of sunlight before we turned back toward the truck.
