The Experience

We were already halfway down Diamond Bar Road when the first Joshua trees started popping up — weird, spiky silhouettes against that pale Nevada sky. Our guide, Sam, pointed out which ones were oldest (the gnarlier, the better apparently). I tried to get a selfie but Sam just grinned and said, “Wait till you see what’s next.” He had this big camera slung over his shoulder and I remember thinking: okay, this is going to be different from my usual phone pics.

He snapped a few photos while we changed jackets behind a boulder — apparently outfit changes are part of the deal, which felt silly until I saw how different each shot looked. Lunch at Sky View Restaurant was hot and comforting; I still remember the smell of coffee mixing with desert air through the open door.

Guano Point was next. You can walk right out onto this narrow ridge — red dust on your shoes, Colorado River way below. Sam kept telling stories about old mining days while catching us in these candid moments (my partner laughing as her hair blew everywhere). At Hualapai Ranch there were these wooden buildings straight out of an old Western movie; some kids were pretending to lasso invisible cattle. The last stop was back in the Joshua Tree Forest, light turning gold and soft. It was quieter then. Sam caught one last portrait as we leaned against a tree — not posed, just us looking tired but happy. Honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so seen in photos taken by someone else.
