Harvest, cook and eat what you grew on the same afternoon

A four-hour farm-to-table cooking class at Kulaniapia Falls on Hawaii's Big Island where you harvest over 30 types of seasonal produce and prepare a fresh plant-based lunch in a loft with views of Hilo Bay and Mauna Kea. A community member guides you through the gardens, teaches you about growing food in volcanic soil, and helps you create recipes you can take home and cook again.

The experience

Four hours at Kulaniapia Farms starts in the gardens. You walk through the rows with a guide who grows the food here and teaches as you go, learning what thrives in the volcanic soil and how the seasons decide what ends up on your plate. You harvest the vegetables yourself: whatever is ripe that day becomes your lunch. The operator grows over 30 types of produce, so what you pick changes with the season.

After harvesting, you move to the loft in the barn. This is where you prepare the meal together, using almost entirely what you just pulled from the ground. The space has views across to Hilo Bay and Mauna Kea, and the guide walks you through building a plant-based lunch, explaining techniques and flavor combinations as you cook. You leave with new recipes written down, built around ingredients you now know how to grow or source.

What’s included

  • Everything needed to harvest and prepare the meal.
  • a fresh plant-based lunch you cook together from the produce you harvest.
  • plant-based recipes to take home.

Top questions

What do I actually harvest and cook at Kulaniapia Farms?

You harvest whatever seasonal produce is ripe on the day you visit, the farm grows over 30 types, and use 90% of it in the lunch you prepare together. The specific vegetables change by season, so each class works with what is ready to eat.

Where exactly is the cooking part, and what can I see from there?

You cook in a finished loft inside the barn at Kulaniapia Farms, with views of Hilo Bay and Mauna Kea visible from the space where you prepare and eat your meal.

Can I take recipes home to use after the class?

Yes. You learn plant-based recipes during the class and take them home written down, so you can cook the dishes again using ingredients you source yourself.

What does "farm-to-table" actually mean in this class?

Here it means harvesting produce you help grow, understanding how volcanic soil and seasons shape what you eat, and preparing a meal the same day from ingredients that came out of the ground that morning, not buying from a market or a supplier.
