An enslaved chef's recipe still defines Charleston menus, and you'll learn its story walking the streets where it was born.

A 90-minute food history walking tour through Charleston's historic district, followed by a cooking demonstration and three-course lunch with wine pairings at Bistro a Vin, led by Chef Forrest Parker—South Carolina's only certified chef tour guide. The tour covers 400 years of culinary influence, including lesser-known sites where enslaved cooks shaped the Lowcountry's defining flavors. You leave with copies of Chef Forrest's recipes and the knowledge of how to prepare them.

The Experience

Chef Forrest Parker leads the walking portion through Charleston's historic district, moving between the well-known sights and the overlooked locations where the city's food story actually took shape. The 90-minute route distills four centuries of culinary history into one morning, tracing how enslaved chefs, African ingredients, and European techniques converged to create what Charleston eats today. Parker has spent two decades leading kitchens at some of Charleston's most recognized restaurants and holds the rare credential of being both a South Carolina Chef Ambassador (recognized by Governor Nikki Haley in 2016) and a certified tour guide—the only one in the city with both titles.

The tour ends at Bistro a Vin, a neighborhood spot where you settle in while Chef Forrest demonstrates how to prepare three of his own recipes interpreting heritage Lowcountry classics. He walks you through the techniques and the ingredients—the ones that matter—and then you eat what he's made, with each course paired to wine from the bistro's selection. If wine isn't your choice, Charleston sweet tea and filtered water are available. The whole experience runs about four hours from start to finish.

You take home copies of Chef Forrest's recipes, so the cooking part doesn't end when lunch does. Food allergies, vegetarian diets, vegan preferences, dairy restrictions, nut allergies and gluten-free needs can all be accommodated, but Chef Forrest asks that you message him directly in advance—he cooks and handles meats, shellfish, eggs, dairy, nuts and gluten regularly, and he needs to know what to prepare for.

Top questions

What's the actual history you'll learn on the walking part?

The tour traces how enslaved chefs, African ingredients and European techniques shaped Charleston into a top food destination. You'll visit both famous landmarks and lesser-known sites—like the location where an enslaved chef created a recipe that still appears on Charleston menus today—to understand how those culinary influences took root and stayed.

Who is Chef Forrest Parker?

Chef Forrest Parker is Charleston's only certified chef tour guide and a South Carolina Chef Ambassador, recognized by Governor Nikki Haley in 2016. He's been leading restaurant kitchens since 1995 and has been called a visionary who draws on South Carolina's culture, history and flavor traditions to create heritage-infused experiences.

What exactly do you cook and eat at Bistro a Vin?

Chef Forrest demonstrates how to prepare three of his own recipes that interpret Lowcountry classics using heritage ingredients and techniques he's mastered over two decades. You then eat a three-course lunch where each dish is paired with wine from Bistro a Vin's selection.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies?

Yes—vegetarians, vegans, pescatarians, dairy allergies, nut allergies and gluten-free diets can all be accommodated. You must message Chef Forrest directly in advance to arrange it, since he regularly cooks with meats, shellfish, eggs, dairy, nuts and gluten and needs to prepare separately for your needs.

Do you get to keep the recipes?

Yes, each guest leaves with copies of Chef Forrest's recipes as a gift, so you can recreate the dishes at home after the tour.
