The Experience

We hopped into the pedicab right outside Central Park and I swear, within seconds, the sounds of honking faded behind us. Our guide—his name was Erkan—pointed out that even New Yorkers still get lost in these 843 acres sometimes. He had this habit of slowing down at corners so we could catch little things: a saxophone player tucked under an elm, the smell of roasted nuts drifting over from a vendor (I almost caved). The city felt different from this seat—less rushed, more like you’re in on a secret.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much at the Central Park Carousel. Kids squealing, horses creaking around since 1871—Erkan told us stories about how it used to run on real horses underground (I’m still not sure if he was joking). We rolled past Bow Bridge where a couple posed for what looked like an engagement shot; honestly, it’s hard not to stare at all that cast iron and water reflections. At Bethesda Fountain he offered to take our picture and somehow caught us both mid-laugh—best photo of the trip, hands down.

Strawberry Fields was quieter than I thought it’d be. Someone left fresh flowers on the “Imagine” mosaic, and there was this hush even though people were everywhere. We stopped near Gapstow Bridge too—the stone felt cool when I touched it (couldn’t help myself). There’s something about gliding through all these spots without having to watch your feet or rush to keep up with a group. Even my partner, who usually hates tours, said he’d do it again just for that feeling of being part of the park’s slow rhythm.
