The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel so much wind in my face as we zipped past the first row of horse carriages at Central Park’s entrance—honestly, I thought pedicabs were just for tourists who didn’t want to walk. But our guide, Samir, started pointing out little things right away: the way the elms twist above Literary Walk, how the light hits the Bethesda Terrace steps at certain hours (he said 4pm is best but we were there around noon, so maybe next time). There was this faint smell of roasted nuts from a cart somewhere behind us—it mixed with that leafy park smell I always forget exists in New York.

We stopped at Bow Bridge and Samir told us about all the movies filmed there—I tried to remember which ones but mostly just stared at the water. The bridge itself feels smooth and cold if you run your hand along it (I did, probably not supposed to). Then he took us to Strawberry Fields. Someone had left fresh flowers on the “Imagine” mosaic. It was quieter than I expected; people were actually whispering, which felt rare for Manhattan. Our guide shared a story about John Lennon living nearby—he seemed genuinely moved talking about it. I guess I was too.

The Central Park Carousel surprised me—I hadn’t seen one up close since I was a kid. The music is kind of tinny and happy and echoes weirdly between the trees. We passed the Balto statue after that; Samir made us guess why there’s a sled dog in New York (I got it wrong). By then my legs had started to tingle from sitting still but I didn’t mind—the city looked different from that low seat, like everything slowed down for once. We finished near Sheep Meadow where people were sunbathing even though it wasn’t that warm yet. I still think about that view over the grass with skyscrapers peeking through.
