The Experience
You’re suddenly in the middle of Central Park, wind on your face, and that weirdly sweet smell from the horse carriages mixing with fresh-cut grass. Our pedicab driver—Alexei, I think?—waves at someone he knows near Bethesda Terrace. He points out that spot where John Lennon used to walk (I didn’t know that), and then we’re off again, weaving past joggers and a group of kids chasing pigeons. The city noise fades into this gentle background hum, which is honestly kind of peaceful for Manhattan.
We stopped at Bow Bridge because apparently every movie ever filmed here has a scene there. Alexei insisted on snapping our picture (he’s surprisingly good at finding angles where you don’t look awkward). There was this moment by the water when everything felt still except for some distant saxophone—maybe just a busker warming up? Anyway, I’m glad we had time to linger. The tour is flexible; he kept asking what we wanted to see next or if we needed to warm up (it was colder than I expected for April).
I tried saying “Shakespeare Garden” in Russian after Alexei mentioned it’s his favorite spot—he laughed so hard I almost fell off the seat. We rolled through those quieter paths most people skip, and he told us about how Central Park changes with each season (I’d never thought about it like that before). By the time we reached the zoo entrance, my hands were freezing but I didn’t really care—I still think about how calm it felt compared to the rest of New York. We ended near Strawberry Fields, and he let us sit a little longer before heading back. No rush.
