The experience
The Indian River Lagoon near Orlando holds one of Florida's few reliably bioluminescent waters, and a clear kayak or paddleboard puts you directly above it. Every paddle stroke and hand movement in the water triggers a brilliant blue shimmer. The glow comes from dinoflagellates, single-celled organisms that light up when disturbed. The guides teach you to paddle as the sun sets, turning the sky pink and orange while you head toward horseshoe crab island. Once there, you walk the sand bar to spot horseshoe crabs and comb jellies (which glow a different way), and you can cup the water in your hands to watch the stars appear in the glow.
After sunset, the bioluminescence intensifies. Fish swimming below your kayak or paddleboard become visible only as glowing blue shapes moving through the dark water. An effect that is hard to describe until you see it. The guides encourage you to take a short swim and make "glow angels" by moving your arms and legs through the water to create trails of light. Conditions vary nightly. During off-peak bioluminescence months, you may also encounter comb jellies, which produce their own distinct glow. The whole experience runs 2 hours from start to finish, with 1.5 hours on the water.
You choose between two options at booking: sunset plus glow, which catches the light show as day turns to night, or the full-night experience for a deeper immersion in the bioluminescence. Both depart near Orlando and operate beyond the theme parks. The kayak or paddleboard is clear so you see straight down. You get paddles, a life vest, a dry bag for keys and phone, and safety lights. A local guide leads the group at a relaxed pace and teaches paddling basics as you go: no prior experience is needed, though moderate fitness helps.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 12 years). Children under 3 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is bioluminescence and why does the water glow?
Bioluminescence on the Indian River Lagoon comes from dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms that produce light when the water is disturbed. Every paddle stroke, hand movement and fish swimming below triggers a bright blue glow. The effect is strongest after dark and varies nightly depending on water conditions and organism density.
Can I really see fish glowing beneath the kayak?
Yes, the clear kayak or paddleboard lets you watch fish swim below as glowing blue shapes. The glow is created by the dinoflagellates reacting to the fish's movement, so you see the outline and path of the fish illuminated in the water beneath you.
What's the difference between the sunset plus glow and full-night options?
The sunset plus glow option catches the sky changing color as you paddle out, then transitions into the bioluminescence show. The full-night option skips the sunset and focuses entirely on the glow after dark, offering a longer and more immersive experience in the bioluminescence itself.
Do I need kayaking experience to join?
No, the tour is beginner-friendly and the guides teach paddling basics as you go. Moderate physical fitness is recommended, and children are welcome from age 3.
What happens if the bioluminescence is weak on the night I book?
Conditions vary nightly and depend on water temperature, organism density and other natural factors. During off-peak bioluminescence months, you may encounter comb jellies instead, which produce their own unique glow. The guides will work with what nature provides on your night.
