The Experience

I’d never actually seen a manatee before this morning, which sounds ridiculous for someone who’s lived near the coast half their life. But there we were—me wobbling on a paddle board, my friend already gliding ahead—and suddenly our guide, Mike, just pointed: “There.” At first I thought it was a rock. Then it moved. Slow, gentle. The water was warm against my toes (I went barefoot; you really don’t need shoes), and there was this sweet grassy smell everywhere—like summer mixed with river mud.

The dolphins showed up out of nowhere—honestly startled me. They’re louder than you’d think when they come up for air. Mike laughed when I nearly dropped my paddle (he said it happens all the time). Afterwards, we wandered over to the Veteran’s Memorial Park because it’s right there and free—figured why not? My shoulders were tired but in that good way. The sun was already getting high by then; I wish I’d worn more sunscreen but at least I remembered my hat. Sometimes I still think about how quiet everything got when the manatee surfaced next to me—just this big peaceful shadow moving through green water. Kind of humbling.
