The experience

What makes this tour work is the route itself. The Banana River Manatee Refuge and the Thousand Islands Conservation Area (a 338-acre stretch of over 1,000 small islands in the Indian River Lagoon) are two of the few places in Florida where you reliably see West Indian manatees alongside dolphins, sea turtles, pelicans, roseate spoonbills and live conch. Most of these islands are only reachable by boat or kayak, so paddling is the only way in. You choose between a one or two-person kayak or a premium stand-up paddleboard, and the guide leads you through the route, stopping for about 30 minutes in the Thousand Islands area to point out wildlife and the history of the town.

The two-hour paddle is built for all fitness levels, and the operator provides everything you need: lifejackets, paddles for both kayaks and boards, and what they describe as the finest paddleboards in the world. Children from age 4 can join.
