The Experience

You launch from Cocoa Beach into a maze of mangrove tunnels in the Thousand Islands, where the trees form a canopy overhead and the water narrows into passages only a kayak can reach. The Wilderness System Tarpon kayaks—available in single and tandem—have excellent back support, and the paddle itself is straightforward enough that the focus stays on what moves in the water around you. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat; the mangroves offer shade, but the sun reflects off the water, and the paddling takes about two and a half hours.

The wildlife depends on the season and the hour. Manatees are most common March through August, and the 9 a.m. tours tend to catch the most activity—both manatees and dolphins move through these channels, and wading birds work the shallows. Nothing is guaranteed when you're paddling in nature, but the small group size (no more than ten people) means less disturbance and better odds of a quiet encounter. Cell phone dry boxes and dry bags are available if you want to bring a camera, and the operator emails photos within 48 hours after the tour ends.
