The experience
The Indian River Lagoon is one of only five bioluminescent bays in the world, and Titusville is where the glow is brightest. You'll launch from Titusville with a guide who handles the safety briefing and shares how bioluminescence actually works while you paddle. The kayak, paddle, personal floatation device, whistle and flashlight are all included, so you show up ready to get on the water.
The route heads first toward the manatee box, where these marine mammals often surface right next to the kayak: close enough that you can reach over and give one a scratch if the moment happens. After time with the manatees, you'll paddle in search of dolphins actively hunting through the lagoon, and it's common to see them leap out of the water to catch fish mid-air. The whole paddle stays in the local vicinity of the lagoon, so the focus stays on the wildlife and the water itself.
As dusk settles, the bioluminescence intensifies. Every paddle stroke and movement through the water leaves a trail of light, and the guides know how to show you the effect at its most intense. The sunset and the glow together make up the final stretch of the 90-minute paddle, ending while there's still enough light to navigate back to the launch point. Titusville is also home to NASA, so depending on the evening, a rocket launch is possible from the water.

What exactly is bioluminescence and why does it happen in the Indian River Lagoon?
Bioluminescence is the natural glow produced by dinoflagellate algae in the water. The Indian River Lagoon is one of only five bioluminescent bays in the world, and the guides share the science of how it works while you paddle through it at dusk, when the glow is most visible.
Will I actually see manatees and dolphins, or is that not guaranteed?
The manatee box is a known spot where manatees regularly surface, and dolphins actively hunt in the lagoon throughout the day, so encounters are common. The guides head toward these areas, though wildlife sightings depend on what's in the water on any given evening.
Do I need kayaking experience to do this, or is it for beginners too?
The activity suits all physical fitness levels, and children from age 5 are welcome. The guides provide a safety briefing before launch, and you'll be paddling in the local vicinity of the lagoon, so the pace is manageable for beginners.
