The experience

The tour starts at 9 a.m. from your hotel and runs nine hours, moving through Dubai's oldest and newest districts in sequence. You'll begin at Jumeirah Beach for a photo stop, then visit Jumeirah Mosque (the most photographed mosque in Dubai, with white walls that photograph best at dusk) followed by an Islamic Art Gallery featuring Arabian carpets and souvenirs. The guide directs the stops. Entrance to the mosque itself is optional and only open certain mornings (Saturday through Thursday, with specific hours), so plan ahead if you want to step inside.

The creek crossing is the day's centerpiece: you board an authentic abra (traditional wooden water taxi) and ride across to Deira, where the Dubai Spice Souk sprawls with exotic spices and gold. After exploring the souk, you return by water taxi from Bur Dubai Village, then drive to Dubai Mall (the world's largest shopping destination with over 1,200 stores), where your guide directs you to the Burj Khalifa entrance. You ascend to the 124th floor for an unobstructed view of the entire city and the Arabian Gulf. The monorail ride across Palm Jumeirah comes next, running along the trunk of the man-made island and offering views of the development from above.

The tour ends at Marina Walk, an open-air promenade with restaurants, cafes and boutiques along the Dubai Marina, then passes through Jumeirah Lake Towers and concludes at the Mall of the Emirates in Barsha. Your hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is the air-conditioned vehicle for the entire day. The guide speaks English live. The mosque is closed Fridays. Women must cover their head with a scarf and wear long pants or a long skirt. Men must wear long trousers.

What is the abra boat ride like?

An abra is a traditional wooden water taxi that crosses Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira. The ride gives you views of the cityscape and takes you directly to the Dubai Spice Souk, where you can browse exotic spices and gold souvenirs.
