The Experience
I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to feel so small walking into Hagia Sophia. Our guide, Selim, met us right outside our hotel (he’d texted ahead—super helpful) and by the time we stepped inside that huge dome, I was just staring up like a kid. The air felt cool and a bit musty, almost like old books. Selim told us about the mosaics—some gold bits catching the morning light—and he joked that even locals still find new details every visit. I tried to spot them all but got distracted by a group of school kids whispering in Turkish, their voices echoing around the marble.
We crossed over to the Blue Mosque after—shoes off, socks on (I’d forgotten mine had holes). The blue Iznik tiles really are everywhere but not in a flashy way; it’s more like they’re quietly showing off. There was this faint scent of incense mixed with something floral from outside. I asked Selim if he ever gets tired of these places and he just smiled—said his grandmother used to bring him here as a boy. That made me see it differently for a second. We wandered through Sultanahmet Square where people fed pigeons and someone played an old saz near the Hippodrome ruins.
The Basilica Cistern was next—colder underground than I thought it’d be, with water dripping somewhere out of sight. It’s darker down there than photos show; my friend tried to take a selfie and nearly dropped her phone into the water (she didn’t). Those Medusa heads at the base of the columns were creepier in person. After that we walked to Topkapi Palace—I remember my feet started hurting but then we got distracted by stories about sultans and jealousies and jewels bigger than eggs.
The Grand Bazaar was last. It’s loud and chaotic but not scary—just busy in that Istanbul way. Sellers called out “Welcome!” in about five languages; I bought some pomegranate tea after haggling badly (Selim laughed at my attempt). The smells of leather and spices kind of stuck to my clothes for hours afterward. We said goodbye outside one of those arched gates—I still think about that view back toward Sultanahmet as we left, sun starting to dip behind minarets.
