The experience

Sultanahmet, Istanbul's Old City, holds the landmarks that shaped empires. Your guide meets you in the morning and takes you first to Hagia Sophia, the 6th-century cathedral-turned-mosque whose massive dome and mosaics still dominate the skyline. Next is the Blue Mosque, built in the early 1600s with six minarets and the blue Iznik tiles that gave it its name. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and sit across from each other in the same square, so you move between them on foot and see how the city layered its history.

From there you walk to the Hippodrome of Constantinople, where chariot races once drew crowds to the Byzantine capital. The Egyptian Obelisk, Serpent Column and German Fountain still stand on the site. Then comes Topkapi Palace, the Ottoman sultans' residence for nearly 400 years, where you tour the courtyards and see the Treasury with its famous jewels and the Spoonmaker's Diamond. The palace sits on a promontory with Bosphorus views. Note that Topkapi closes on Tuesdays. Your guide will arrange an alternative if that affects your date.

The Basilica Cistern comes next. You descend underground into a 6th-century Roman structure built by Emperor Justinian, famous for its marble columns rising from the water and the Medusa heads that appear in its depths. It's the same cistern featured in Dan Brown's *Inferno* and the James Bond film *From Russia with Love*. The walk down and around the water is the tour's only non-walking moment, and it breaks up the day. You finish at the Grand Bazaar, a covered market of over 60 streets and 4,000 shops selling carpets, jewelry, leather, ceramics and traditional Turkish crafts. The bazaar closes on Sundays and during Ramadan holidays. Your guide will substitute the Spice Market if needed. You have time to browse and shop before the tour ends.

Your guide speaks English and carries fast-track tickets arranged in advance, so you enter each major site without waiting in the regular queue. Entrance fees are paid in cash directly to the guide on the day. The tour is mostly walking, so wear comfortable shoes. Women should bring a scarf to cover their heads when entering the mosques. If you book a morning start at 12:00 p.m., the tour runs 6 hours. Earlier starts can extend to 8 hours depending on how much time you spend at each stop.
