The experience

Hagia Sophia opens the day. The structure that has stood for nearly 1,500 years, shifting from Byzantine cathedral to Ottoman mosque to museum, each layer visible in the architecture itself. Your guide walks you through what that layering means: the dome, the minarets added centuries later, the way the building holds the city's entire history in one space. From there, the Basilica Cistern pulls you underground into a 6th-century reservoir built to supply the imperial palaces, its columns and Medusa heads rising from the water in a space that feels like stepping into another Istanbul entirely.

The Blue Mosque comes next: completed in 1616, its blue Iznik tiles and multiple domes representing the peak of Ottoman design.
