The experience

The tour starts at the Hippodrome of Constantinople, now Sultanahmet Square, where three ancient monuments stand: the 3,500-year-old Obelisk of Theodosius, the Serpent Column from Delphi, and the Walled Obelisk. Your guide explains what each one marks in the city's layered history. From there you move to the Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616, where more than 20,000 handmade İznik ceramic tiles line the interior walls, many in blue, and over 200 stained glass windows fill the space with light.

Hagia Sophia comes next: the engineering marvel completed in 537 AD under Emperor Justinian I, which held the title of world's largest building for centuries. The structure carries visible traces of every era: the original Christian mosaics and marble pillars, the Islamic calligraphic panels added after 1453, and the recent restoration that returned it to active use. The Basilica Cistern, built in the same 6th-century period, sits underground with 336 marble columns arranged in 12 rows and two Medusa heads set into the bases, creating an atmosphere that feels more cathedral than water tank. Topkapi Palace, the Ottoman sultans' residence for nearly 400 years, sprawls across courtyards and pavilions with views over the Bosporus. The Treasury holds the Topkapi Dagger and the Spoonmaker's Diamond. The day closes at the Grand Bazaar, established in the 15th century and now containing over 4,000 shops across more than 30,000 square meters, selling carpets, jewelry, ceramics, leather goods and textiles through a maze of domed passages and arched alleys.
