The experience

The Blue Mosque opens the day: the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets, its interior covered in blue tiles and ceramics. From there, the route moves through the Hippodrome, where Egyptian and Byzantine columns over 2,500 years old still stand, then to Hagia Sophia. Skip-line tickets mean you walk past the queue and enter directly with your guide for an interior tour of one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. If renovation is underway, the Underground Basilica Cistern, a cavernous Byzantine water system, takes its place.

Topkapi Palace, home of the Ottoman sultans, comes next with pre-reserved entry and a private guided tour that includes the harem section. The palace closes Tuesdays, so your guide adjusts the itinerary if needed. Between major sites, you'll have time at the Grand Bazaar, a sprawling marketplace of 3,700 independent shops where you can browse local carpets, leather, jewelry and ceramics, or try your hand at pottery in a hands-on workshop the tour includes.
