İstanbul Food Tour: Taste Local Street Food in Fatih
Eat where İstanbul eats, not where tourists are told to
A 5-hour walking food tour through Fatih district on İstanbul's European side, led by a local English-speaking guide who stops at neighborhood spots to taste street food, soups, kebab and dessert. You'll walk past the Golden Horn, through the women's market, and end at a restored Ottoman madrasa with tea or coffee while locals relax around you.
The experience
The tour starts in Fatih, the historical peninsula, and moves through the neighborhoods where locals work and live. You'll walk without a guide driving you. Just your feet and the guide pointing out where to stop. The route passes a bridge over the Golden Horn where you can pause for photos, then heads into the women's market (Kadınlar Pazarı), where vendors bring meat, cheese, honey and grape molasses from Southeast Anatolia. This is where the food tour actually begins: at the places Istanbulites eat, not at restaurants built for visitors.
You'll taste lahmacun (Turkish pizza with minced meat and vegetables) and büryan kebap at one stop, then move to another for lentil soup, white rice with chickpeas, stuffed mussels and çiğ köfte (a traditional snack of bulgur, tomato paste and vegetables). Künefe (thin, crispy shredded pastry with melted cheese and sweet syrup) comes next. The tour ends at an ancient madrasa, a place where Ottoman scholars once studied and where locals now gather after work. You'll sit there with Turkish tea or coffee, watching people smoke hookah and socialize the way they have for centuries. Soft drinks come with the meals. Everything is included.
There's no bus or van. You walk the whole time, which means you move at the pace of the neighborhood itself and stop when the guide stops. The tour runs 5 hours, so wear shoes you can walk in. If you have a gluten allergy, are vegetarian, avoid dairy or have another food sensitivity, tell the operator when you book. They'll adjust what you taste. Vegans cannot join this tour because the dishes center on meat, cheese and traditional Ottoman cooking.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (7 to 12 years); Infant (under 1).
What is the women's market like, and what do we actually do there?
The women's market (Kadınlar Pazarı) is a neighborhood market in Fatih where vendors sell products brought from Southeast Anatolia: meat, cheese, honey, grape molasses, butter and more. You'll walk through it as part of the route and stop at local food spots nearby to taste street food, not shop in the market itself.
Do we eat at restaurants, or are these street food stops?
You eat at local places where Istanbulites eat. Some spots where you'll sit down, others where you'll stand. They're not tourist restaurants. They're the neighborhood places where people stop for a meal or a snack.
What happens at the madrasa at the end?
The madrasa is a restored Ottoman building where education happened centuries ago and where locals now gather after work to drink tea, coffee and smoke hookah. You'll sit there at the end of the tour with Turkish tea or coffee, watching how locals socialize and relax.
Is there any transportation, or do we walk the whole time?
You walk the entire tour. There's no bus or van, so the pace stays slow and you move through the neighborhood on foot.
Can I do this tour if I have a food allergy or dietary restriction?
Tell the operator about gluten allergies, vegetarian preferences, dairy avoidance or other sensitivities when you book, and they'll adjust the tastings. Vegans cannot participate because the dishes are built around meat, cheese and traditional Ottoman cooking.
