The Experience
We’d barely stepped out of the van in Zelve before our guide, Cem, started pointing out these weirdly beautiful rock shapes — honestly, I’d seen photos but they don’t really prepare you for how the light hits them in person. There was this faint smell of wild herbs in the air (maybe thyme?), and the ground felt almost soft under my shoes. Cem told us about early Christians hiding here — I could almost picture it, though I kept getting distracted by the way the sun made everything look kind of pinkish. We wandered through old cave homes and tiny chapels; at one point I ran my hand along a wall and it left a little dust on my fingers. Not sure why that stuck with me.
Monks Valley was next. The fairy chimneys are even stranger up close — like something out of a storybook but also very real. A couple of local women were selling apricots by the path; I bought some and they laughed when I tried to say “teşekkürler” (I definitely butchered it). Our group was small enough that Cem answered every random question we threw at him — he even showed us where he used to play as a kid. It felt personal, not rushed or scripted.
Lunch was in Avanos — nothing fancy but honestly perfect after all that walking. The bread was warm and there was this lentil soup that tasted like home-cooking (even though my home is nowhere near Turkey). We talked about pottery traditions while watching someone shape clay just across the street. By then I’d stopped worrying about taking photos and just let myself watch people go about their day. On the drive back, everyone got quiet for a bit — maybe tired or maybe just full from lunch and all those stories. I still think about that view from Zelve sometimes; it sneaks up on you later.
