The experience

The three routes divide Cappadocia's geography so you can see the region without repeating ground. The Red Tour takes in Göreme Open Air Museum, Uchisar Castle rising from the plateau, the otherworldly cones of Devrent Valley, and Monks Valley with its Pasabag fairy chimneys. You also stop at Avanos, known for its pottery tradition, and the Greek village of Cavusin. The Green Tour descends into Kaymaklı Underground City, visits Keslik Monastery, and walks Pigeon Valley, where the rock formations shelter thousands of nesting birds. The Blue Tour reaches further into the region (Mustafapasha village, the Soğanlı Valley, and the ancient city of Sobesos) ending in Ibrahimpaşa if the day still has energy left.

Your guide is local and speaks English, and the van is private, so the route bends to what interests you. Kaymaklı Underground City, visited on the Green Tour, is a multi-level settlement carved into the rock where people once lived, worked and stored food. You walk through narrow passages and chambers to see how the city was organized below ground.
