The experience

The tour splits into two distinct routes that can run in either order depending on your preference. Day one (Red or Green) takes you underground first: you explore Kaymakli, the largest and deepest of Cappadocia's subterranean cities, where you can move through carved chambers and passages to understand how people once lived below ground. From there you walk 3.5 km down into Ihlara Valley, a narrow gorge cut by a river, stopping at restaurants along the way for lunch. The afternoon brings you to Pigeon Valley, where dovecotes honeycomb the rock face, and either Selime Monastery or Nar lake depending on what interests you most.

Day two (Green or Red) stays above ground and focuses on the landscape and its human history. You visit the Göreme Open-Air Museum, where Byzantine churches carved into the rock still bear faint frescoes from the 9th to 11th centuries. Uchisar Castle sits on a hilltop overlooking the town and gives you a panoramic view of the whole region. Then you move through the valleys: Monks Valley with its towering rock formations, and Devrent Valley, where the fairy chimneys take on animal shapes that locals have named over centuries. The route covers the terrain that makes Cappadocia visually distinct, not a single landmark but a whole landscape of stone.

Your guide speaks English and travels with your group in a private vehicle, so the pace and stops adjust to what you want to see. The operator organizes the tour around guest interests, which means if you prefer one site over another or want to linger somewhere, that shapes the day. Hotel pickup is included, and you stay in accommodation you've already booked. The tour itself covers transportation and the guide.

What’s included

  • Private transportation in a vehicle for both days.
  • private English-speaking guide.
  • parking fees at all sites.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Kaymakli Underground City like to walk through?

Kaymakli is the largest and deepest underground city in the region, carved into soft volcanic rock with multiple levels of chambers, passages and storage areas. You explore the carved spaces to see how residents once lived entirely below ground, moving through narrow corridors and rooms that descend deeper than most other underground sites in Cappadocia.

How long is the walk in Ihlara Valley?

The walk from the main gate to the restaurants runs 3.5 km, following the river through the narrow gorge. You stop for lunch at the bottom, so the walk is broken into a descent and then a return, not a single continuous hike.

What are the painted churches in the Göreme Open-Air Museum?

The Göreme Open-Air Museum holds Byzantine churches carved directly into the rock, with frescoes and religious paintings still visible on the walls despite their age. The churches date from the 9th to 11th centuries and show how monks and communities used the natural stone formations as places of worship.

Can I choose which route to do first, Red or Green?

Yes. The Red and Green tours cover the same sites but in different orders, and you can pick which one suits your schedule or energy level on each day. The operator arranges the sequence based on your preference.

What makes the fairy chimneys in Devrent Valley distinctive?

Devrent Valley's fairy chimneys have shapes that resemble animals, which is why locals call it the Imagination Valley. The rock formations stand out from other valleys in the region because of these recognizable silhouettes carved by erosion over time.
