The experience
The tour begins with hotel pickup in Istanbul and a flight to Cappadocia, cutting out the six-hour drive and putting you on the ground by mid-morning. Your guide meets you at the airport and takes you straight into Devrent Valley, where the landscape shifts into something otherworldly: towering fairy chimneys, mushroom-shaped rock spires, and the remnants of cave dwellings carved into soft volcanic stone. Pasabag, also called Monks Valley, sits next, its formations so distinctive that they've drawn visitors for centuries. By midday you're in Avanos watching potters at work, using techniques that have passed through generations, then eating an open buffet lunch at a traditional restaurant before heading to Göreme Open Air Museum: a UNESCO site where rock-cut churches and monasteries hold ancient frescoes telling the region's religious history. The day ends at a carpet gallery, where you can see the hand-weaving that goes into each piece.
You overnight in a cave hotel (either Melekler Evi Cave Hotel or Urgup Konak Hotel), which puts you inside the same stone formations you've been walking past all day. Day two starts early if you've booked the optional hot air balloon ride, offering views across the entire lunar landscape. If not, you begin at a slower pace. Either way, a 2km walk through Cavusin Village and the Red Valley comes next, followed by Özkonak Underground City. You descend into four of the eight accessible levels: tunnels that once sheltered up to 5,000 people during wartime and now serve as storage and cellars. After emerging, you visit the Onyx Centre to see how artisans work the stone. Pigeon Valley comes in the afternoon, famous for the pigeon houses carved into the tuff cliffs, and a leather factory rounds out the shopping before you head to Kayseri Airport for your flight back to Istanbul.
Choose between shared group tours and private options at checkout. The small group version without flights works if you're already in Cappadocia or prefer to arrange your own transport. The ticket-included options bundle museum and site entry so there's no stopping at gates. The hot air balloon add-on departs early and requires booking in advance. All ground transport, guide, breakfast, and two lunches are included. Beverages beyond that and tips are on you.

Is this one for you?Book the small group option if you want to meet other travelers and share costs. Choose private if your group prefers its own pace and guide. The hot air balloon add-on requires an early start on day two, so skip it if you'd rather sleep in after the flight and cave hotel. If you're already in Cappadocia or traveling overland, the no-flight option cuts the cost and lets you join the tour starting day one afternoon.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Infant (under 2): free.
What exactly is inside Özkonak Underground City that I'll actually see?
Özkonak Underground City opens four of its eight levels to visitors, revealing the tunnels and chambers that once housed up to 5,000 people seeking refuge during wartime. You walk through storage areas and cellars carved into the bedrock, seeing how the space was organized and used across centuries.
Does the hot air balloon ride happen on both days or just one?
The hot air balloon is optional and runs early on day two only, before the rest of the morning itinerary. If you book it, you'll launch at dawn to see the fairy chimneys and valleys from above. If you skip it, day two starts at a slower pace with the walk through Cavusin Village.
What's the difference between the pottery workshop and the other craft stops?
The pottery workshop in Avanos is a hands-on stop where you watch skilled artisans at work using ancient techniques, then usually have a chance to try the wheel yourself. The carpet gallery, onyx centre, and leather factory are showrooms where you see finished pieces and can shop, but the pottery stop emphasizes the craft itself in action.
How much time do I actually spend walking or hiking on this tour?
The main walk is a 2km route through Cavusin Village on day two, which is leisurely and takes about an hour. The rest of the tour involves walking between sites and exploring museums and underground spaces at your own pace. There's no strenuous hiking or long-distance trekking.
Can I do this tour without flying from Istanbul, or is the flight required?
The small group option without flight lets you skip the Istanbul flights and join the tour in Cappadocia itself, which works if you're already there or prefer to arrange your own transport. All other options include roundtrip flights from Istanbul as part of the package.
What's included in the cave hotel stay, and is it actually inside a cave?
Your one night is at Melekler Evi Cave Hotel or Urgup Konak Hotel, or a similar property. These are built into or carved from the same stone formations you see throughout the region, giving you the experience of sleeping inside Cappadocia's unique geology. Breakfast is included. The room itself is the accommodation, and meals beyond breakfast are separate.
