The Experience
"Don’t worry, you’ll dry off before lunch," our guide joked as we climbed out of the kayaks at Bang Rong Pier. I was still dripping from paddling through those tangled mangroves—honestly, I’d never seen roots like that, all twisted and reaching into the water. There was this moment when a bird darted right over my paddle and I almost tipped us over (sorry, Mai!). The air smelled green—if that makes sense—and salty at the same time. We saw a couple of monkeys up in the branches too, just watching us float by like we were the entertainment.
Lunch hit differently after all that paddling. It was this little spot in Phang-Nga Province—plastic chairs, fans spinning overhead, and plates of curry that made my nose run in a good way. Our guide Li showed me how to eat sticky rice properly (I definitely didn’t do it right). Then we drove deeper into the jungle for the Ton Phrai Waterfall trek. It’s not an easy stroll—roots everywhere and my shoes got muddy fast—but hearing that waterfall before you see it? That’s something else. The water was freezing but I jumped in anyway; couldn’t help myself.
The hot springs after felt almost surreal. Steam rising off the pools, people laughing softly, and this odd mix of heat from below and cool breeze above. I alternated between the hot pool and this ice-cold plunge—my skin tingled for ages after. Someone handed me a coconut with a straw while I sat half-submerged; I remember thinking, “This is so weirdly perfect.” And then Natai Beach: just soft sand underfoot and a sky turning gold over the Andaman Sea. We barely talked, just watched the light change until it got dark enough to head back.
