The experience

You're picked up from your Ao Nang or Railay hotel between 7:30 and 8:30 and driven to the speedboat. The boat holds a maximum of 12 people, so it stays small enough that the guide can adjust the route on the water if the group wants to linger somewhere or skip ahead. The engine cuts out first at Bamboo Island, where the seabed is thick with colorful fish and the water stays clear enough to see down. Snorkeling gear and life jackets come with you. The guide carries a fish ID card so you can name what swims past.

From there the route branches depending on what you've told the operator you want. Nui Bay sits on Phi Phi Don's quieter side: a place to float and rest between snorkeling runs. Monkey Beach is the loud stop, crowded with tourists and the monkeys that give it its name. Keep your phone and sunglasses close. Maya Bay, the famous white-sand beach from the film "The Beach," is closed to swimmers, so you photograph it from the boat while the guide explains why the closure happened. Pileh Lagoon is a narrow inlet wrapped in cliffs. Viking Cave, home to the Gypsies of the Sea, gets a short stop for photos. Water, soft drinks and fresh fruit come aboard. Lunch on the beach is available if you arrange it when you book.
