The Experience

Your driver picks you up from your Phuket hotel between 7 and 8 AM—the exact time arrives by email at least 24 hours ahead. You'll reach AA Marina or Royal Phuket Marina by 9 AM, where a light Thai breakfast and coffee wait while your English-speaking guide runs through the day's stops and safety rules. The boat departs around 9:30 AM for the Phi Phi Islands.

The route hits Pi Leh Lagoon first, where you swim in the canyon-like cove and take in the limestone walls; then Loh Samah Bay, a coral-filled anchorage where you can photograph both Sama Bay and Maya Bay from the boat deck. Maya Bay itself is a short five-minute walk from where the boat docks—the white sand and turquoise water are the real draw, though swimming inside the bay is now prohibited to protect the reef. You'll also stop at Monkey Beach to photograph the wild monkeys from a safe distance, and at Koh Khai Nok in Ao Phang Nga, where paddleboards are available and fresh fruit keeps you going. Lunch is a Thai buffet served on Phi Phi Don, the largest island in the group. Snorkel gear and life jackets are provided throughout.

The boat returns to the marina in late afternoon with light refreshments on board, and your driver takes you back to your hotel by around 7 PM. Tides shift the order of stops day to day, so the itinerary may vary slightly. The speedboat ride is fast and can be rough—free seasick pills are available at check-in if you need them. Pi Leh Lagoon, also called Ao Pileh or Pileh Cove, is a dramatic canyon-like formation on Koh Phi Phi Leh where the limestone cliffs almost split the island in two. You swim in the crystal-clear water and take in the scenery; local longtail boat vendors operate there if you want an extra ride, but that costs extra and is not part of the tour.

Can you swim in Maya Bay itself?

No—swimming is now prohibited inside Maya Bay to protect the reef ecosystem, as mandated by the Thai government. You can walk the white sand beach and enjoy the views, but the water is off-limits. You'll have already swum at Pi Leh Lagoon and Loh Samah Bay earlier in the day.

Are the meals actually included, or do I pay extra?
