The Experience

We stepped onto the speedboat at Royal Phuket Marina with the sun barely up, salt already in the air. The engine started with a low growl and we were off—spray on our faces, wind tangling my hair, everyone grinning like kids. Our guide, Nok, handed out cold water and pointed out shapes in the limestone cliffs as we zipped into Phang Nga Bay. It’s hard to explain how green the water looks out here—almost fake, but not quite. I caught myself just staring at it while someone behind me tried (and failed) to take a selfie without squinting.

The first stop was Panak Island. We ducked into a cave that smelled like wet stone and something sweet—maybe mangrove blossoms? Nok shone her flashlight on rock formations that looked nothing like what she claimed (“ice cream cave,” she said; I saw more of a melted candle). There was this hush inside except for our footsteps and some distant bird echoing through the tunnel. After that came Talu Island—canoeing under low arches, sometimes so close you had to lie back or risk bumping your nose on ancient rock. Our paddle guy laughed when I tried to say “thank you” in Thai (I definitely butchered it), but he smiled anyway.

Lunch was at Panyee Island—a floating village where everything creaks gently underfoot. The fish curry tasted like coconut and chili and I still think about it when I smell lemongrass now. We wandered past stalls selling dried squid and football shirts (odd combo), then got back on board for the main event: James Bond Island. Honestly, it’s smaller than I expected but kind of surreal seeing that spiky rock from all those movie posters just sitting there in the bay. People were posing everywhere but there’s a quiet spot if you walk around back—Nok showed us—and you can just watch the boats come and go.

Last stop: Naka Island for swimming. The sand squeaked under my feet and palm trees leaned over us like they’d been watching tourists forever. I floated for a while staring up at the sky thinking how weird it is that places like this actually exist outside of screensavers or postcards. Then we sped back to Phuket with sea spray drying on our skin and everyone a little quieter than before—not tired exactly, just full.
