The Death Railway Centre sits in an air-conditioned building that doesn't look like much from the outside, but once you step in, the weight of what you're about to learn hits differently. An 11-hour day trip from Bangkok takes you west to Kanchanaburi, where a 2-hour drive gets you to this interactive museum first — the place where 90,000 civilian labourers and over 12,000 Allied prisoners of war were forced to build a 415-kilometre railway between Thailand and Burma during World War II. Your private guide walks you through the exhibits, and the story doesn't feel distant or textbook. It's specific. It's there.

After the museum, you move to the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, where about 6,000 Allied POWs who died along the railway line are buried.
