The day splits into two halves: the markets in the morning, the waterfall and river in the afternoon. You start at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market with a motorboat ride through water vendors selling Thai fruits, coconut ice cream and boat noodles from wooden boats. The market has operated this way for over a hundred years. Then comes the Railway Market, where the real spectacle happens: you board a local train toward Mae Klong station, and when the signal rings, vendors rush to pull their stalls and goods clear of the tracks before the train passes at speed. Once it does, they set everything back up. Between the two markets, you visit a coconut sugar farm to watch how Thai farmers cut coconut flowers, collect the nectar in bamboo containers and boil it into drinkable form, and a salt field where local farmers rotate seawater across different levels until it becomes salt mountains ready for cooking and skincare.
If you book the extended route, the afternoon takes you to Erawan Waterfall in Erawan National Park. The hike covers three hours through thick rainforest to reach all seven tiers of the falls, each with its own emerald-green pond where you can swim. The waterfall is named after Erawan, the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology, and the top tier is said to resemble an elephant's head. After the waterfall, you walk across the Bridge on the River Kwai (the iron structure famous from films and books), with viewing platforms between the trestles. Lunch at a raft restaurant near the bridge is included on the extended route.
Your guide is a licensed, English-speaking professional. The vehicle is private and air-conditioned, and your hotel pickup and drop-off are arranged.
