The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Bangkok hotel near the BTS skytrain, then a drive west to Erawan National Park. You'll spend three hours at the waterfall itself: a seven-tiered cascade that drops through rainforest, each tier feeding an emerald pool where you can swim. The park's name comes from Hindu mythology: the top tier is said to resemble an elephant's head. Admission is included, and the walk between levels is manageable for anyone with moderate fitness.

After lunch (included), the tour moves to Kanchanaburi's historical sites. You'll walk the Bridge on the River Kwai, a black iron structure famous from films and books, with steel plates over the ties and viewing platforms between the trestles so you can step aside if a train passes. The JEATH War Museum occupies a former detention hut and displays photographs and records from the 1942–1945 death railway construction, when prisoners from Japan, England, America, Australia, Thailand and Holland were forced to work. The museum's name is built from those six countries. Then comes a 45-minute long-tailed boat ride on the river itself, departing from Wat Tai temple, where you'll wear a life jacket and see the landscape from the water.

Wat Tham Khao Pun, a cave temple with illuminated passageways, is the last major stop. You'll duck through a limestone labyrinth to find subterranean shrines. Chong Kai War Cemetery, two kilometers south on the riverbank, is optional. Tell your guide if you want to visit. The tour ends with dropoff at your Bangkok hotel.
