The experience

The day starts early from Bangkok and runs nine hours total. You'll visit Bang Pa-In Royal Palace first: a sprawling complex where Thai kings once spent summers, built across different eras in Thai, Chinese and European styles. From there the tour moves into Ayutthaya Historical Park itself, where five centuries of ruins tell the story of a city that rivalled the greatest capitals in Asia before the Burmese invasion of 1767 destroyed much of it.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet stands out immediately: three distinctive pagodas that are among the most photographed sights in Ayutthaya, and the ruins of what was once the official royal temple where only the king's inner circle could enter. Nearby, Phra Mongkhon Bophit houses one of Thailand's largest bronze Buddha images: 12.5 meters tall, reconstructed after the invasion burned the original. Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, founded in the 14th century, dominates the landscape with its massive prang. Wat Mahathat draws crowds for a single detail: a Buddha head wrapped in tree roots, a image that has become iconic. Wat Chaiwatthanaram, built in 1630 with Khmer-style architecture, closes the loop: a royal monastery where kings performed ceremonies and where members of the royal family were cremated.
