The drive from Bangkok takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and you'll spend the morning and early afternoon moving between five major temples built from the 14th century onward. Wat Yai Chai Mongkol holds the largest chedi (pagoda) in Ayutthaya and still functions as an active temple. Wat Mahathat, the center of all temples during Ayutthaya's reign, is where you'll see a Buddha head half-buried in tree roots: one of the most photographed moments in the city. Your guide explains the history and significance of each site as you walk the grounds.
The private boat tour lasts about an hour and takes you along the river that once surrounded the ancient city. From the water you see Wat Chai Wattanaram, Wat Buddhai Sawan (the first temple built in Ayutthaya), and Wat Phanun Choeng, along with local houses and farms.
