Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Ayutthaya and sunset boat tour

  • Visit Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon temple
  • See ruins of ancient Ayutthaya city
  • Explore large crumbling Chedi and Buddha images
  • Enjoy private long-tail boat tour
  • Watch sunset and take photos at Wat Chaiwatthanaram
  • Drive and photograph city lights at night

The Experience

You arrive in Ayutthaya with a free afternoon or a day between other plans, and the guide picks you up to start at Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon. The temple was built in 1357 under King U Thong, Ayutthaya's first ruler, and a large Chedi was added in 1592 to mark King Naresuan's victory over the Burmese. You walk through the ruins—massive crumbling stupas, low laterite walls, and rows of headless Buddha images, one of which is wedged inside a tree trunk. The temple is typical of what survives from the city's 417-year reign as Thailand's capital, when five dynasties and 33 kings ruled from this island and foreign visitors marveled at its size and wealth.

In the late afternoon, you board a private long-tail boat and drift around Ayutthaya Town Island. From the water you see Wat Chaiwatthanaram rising from the riverbank—one of the old city's most impressive structures—and watch the light change as the sun drops. The boat slows at the temple for photos as the sky turns orange, then you return to the dock. After sunset, the guide drives you through the city to see it lit up at night, a different view of the same ruins you walked through hours earlier.
