The experience

The forest part starts at Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, where red colobus monkeys (a species found nowhere else on earth) live in the dense ground-water forest. You'll also spot blue monkeys, elephant shrews, and bush babies as your guide points out the animals and explains the ecosystem. A raised bridge built by the conservation authority lets you walk above the forest floor without disturbing it, so the wildlife stays undisturbed and you stay dry.

After the forest, you move to a real spice farm at Jambo dole village where you can see, smell, and taste the freshest spices grown there. Your guide walks you through the plantations and explains what each one is used for. Then the tour shifts to Stone Town, Zanzibar's historic city center, where you explore two of the sultanate's forts and walk through the Darajani spice markets and Forodhani to experience the heritage and history written into the streets and buildings.
