The experience

Your day starts in Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, where a professional guide walks you through mangrove swamps and wooded areas looking for red colobus monkeys, bush babies and other island wildlife. The guide explains how these animals evolved in isolation on Zanzibar. From there, a 20-minute boat ride takes you to Prison Island (Changuu Island), where you swim, snorkel and sunbathe near giant land tortoises on a beach with clear Indian Ocean water. The island sits just offshore from Stone Town and has a layered history worth asking your guide about.

Lunch happens at Secret Garden Restaurant, a quiet spot in Stone Town's center with distinctive architecture and design. After eating, you spend three hours walking Stone Town's winding colonial streets with your guide, stopping at the Mkunazini Slave Market and the Palace Museum House. The narrow passages open onto viewpoints across the old city, and your guide shares the history and culture embedded in each stop. Late afternoon, you head south to Kizimkazi Beach and Salaam Cave, where you enter clear water to swim alongside sea turtles. Snorkelling equipment is included for both the Prison Island stop and the cave.

The whole day runs eleven hours with private air-conditioned transport, bottled water and WiFi on board. Pickup is included from your hotel. Children from age one are welcome, and the vehicle and all sites are wheelchair accessible.
