The Experience

Li was already grinning when we met at the corner near Jaws Corner — I think he’d seen enough lost faces in Stone Town to spot newcomers from a mile off. He handed me a tiny cup of spiced coffee (the kind you sip standing up, with laughter and quick Swahili greetings flying around), then pointed at a blue wooden door carved with brass studs. “Omani style,” he said, tapping it gently. The sound was hollow but somehow warm. I didn’t expect to care about doors, but here they’re like old storytellers — you can almost feel the hands that built them.

The morning air smelled like cloves and fish and something sweet I couldn’t place. We ducked into Darajani Market where everything seemed louder and brighter — women in colorful kangas bargaining for breadfruit, a man slicing jackfruit with sticky fingers. Li explained how the market’s been the city’s heart for generations; he waved to a friend selling spices who winked at us and pressed a pinch of saffron into my palm (I still have it in my bag). Our group trailed past the Old Fort — rough coral stone under my hand — and then through narrow lanes where sunlight slipped in crookedly between roofs.

I fumbled the pronunciation of Mji Mkongwe and Li laughed, correcting me softly (“It means ‘old town’, don’t worry”). At the former slave market site, he let us stand quietly for a moment. There’s this heaviness in the air there — hard to describe — mixed with children’s voices echoing from somewhere nearby. We wandered past the House of Wonders (it really does look like it shouldn’t be standing), and by then my feet were tired but I didn’t want to leave yet. You know how sometimes you just want five more minutes?
