The Experience

The first thing that hit me in Stone Town was the mix of scents—cloves and cardamom drifting from the market, mixed with the salty air off the ocean. Our guide, Salim, met us just outside the House of Wonders. The old clock tower was missing its hands (apparently that’s been the case for years), but it didn’t matter—the building still looked grand in the morning light. Salim started off with stories about sultans and traders who shaped this place. We could hear the call to prayer echoing from a nearby mosque as we set off down a narrow alley.

Inside the Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe), I ran my hand along rough coral stone walls while Salim explained how this spot once held slave auctions. It felt heavy standing there, especially with school kids laughing in the courtyard nearby—life goes on, but you can feel the history under your feet. Just around the corner, we stopped outside a pale yellow building where Freddie Mercury grew up. There’s no big sign or anything—just a plaque and usually a couple of fans snapping photos.

Wandering through Stone Town’s tangled streets, we passed wooden doors carved with brass studs—some Indian style, some Arabic. Salim pointed out how you can tell them apart by their shapes and patterns (the Indian ones are rounder at the top). We ducked into a Catholic church for a quick photo before heading to the Anglican cathedral, where boards inside tell tough stories about Zanzibar’s role in the slave trade. The old slave chambers were cool and damp; I remember my shirt sticking to my back from the humidity outside.

The last stop was Darajani Market—a riot of color and noise. Vendors called out in Swahili, selling everything from fresh ginger to little bags of nutmeg. I picked up some spices to take home; they smelled way stronger than anything I’ve found in supermarkets back home.
