The experience

The tour starts with pickup and moves straight into Stone Town's core: the Old Fort, built by the Omanis in the 17th century and now a cultural center with galleries and shops. From there, the route winds through the narrow alleys the city is known for, lined with carved wooden doors and the layered architecture of centuries of settlement. Your guide navigates you to the Sultan's Palace, a grand structure showcasing Swahili and Arab design that now operates as a museum, and the House of Wonders, which sits on the waterfront and tells the story of the island's political and cultural past.

The walk takes in Darajani Market, where the energy shifts: vendors call out over stalls of spices, fruits, textiles, and produce, and the guide can point out what locals actually buy and how the market has functioned as the city's pulse for generations. You'll pass the cathedral built on the site of the former slave market, a solemn landmark with a nearby memorial. Freddie Mercury's birthplace appears on the route as well. The museum inside carries an entrance fee, but you can photograph the exterior. The guide also shows you Jaws Corner, a gathering place where locals drink coffee and tea, and can arrange a stop at Lukmaan Restaurant if you want to taste Zanzibari cuisine (meals run under $20 per person and are your own cost). The Swahili House rooftop offers a view of the whole town if you buy a drink there.

Mineral water is provided during the walk. Some sites (the Old Fort, Sultan's Palace, Freddie Mercury Museum, and the Swahili House) charge separate entrance fees that are not included in the tour price.
