The experience
You arrive in Stone Town and walk straight into the layered history. The Arab Fort, the oldest building in the city, sits on the seafront next to the House of Wonders, the former Sultan's palace, and faces Fordhani Gardens. The gardens themselves line the main sea walk and fill with locals and travelers after sunset, when a food street market sets up in the square serving grilled seafood, samosas, Zanzibar pizza and urojo. The 18th-century House of Wonders, with its intricately carved wooden door showing fish, lotus and anchor motifs, faces out to sea on Mizingani Road.
The tour moves through the narrow winding streets to Darajani Market, where vendors sell fresh fruits, fish and spices. The market has carried multiple names over time, including the spice market and local market. You also visit the site of the former slave market, closed by the Sultan's order in 1873, which became central to the abolition of slavery across Africa and beyond. The Freddie Mercury Museum, located in the heart of Stone Town, documents the life of Farroukh Bulsara from his Zoroastrian roots and childhood in Zanzibar through his schooling in India to his rise as one of the greatest performers of all time.
Stone Town itself was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000 because its 19th-century architecture (a mix of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements) reflects the diverse influences that shaped Swahili culture. Beyond the well-known listed attractions, the guide shows you local cultural landmarks like the Ismail Khoja Jamat Khana, the city's carved doors and Jows Corner, so you see the real culture of the city, not just the tourist route.
