The Experience
Sunlight slipped through the narrow alleys as we wandered Stone Town’s maze. The air was thick with the scent of cloves and grilled corn from a street vendor near Gizenga Street. Our guide, Salim, grew up here—he pointed out the faded blue doors and explained how each carving told a family story. I’d never noticed how the call to prayer echoes off the coral stone walls just before noon. It’s easy to lose track of time here, especially when you’re ducking into tiny shops selling handwoven baskets or pausing to watch kids chase each other past the Old Fort.
We stopped at the House of Wonders—Salim shared how it was the first building in East Africa to get electricity. Inside the market, you’ll see women in bright kangas bargaining for fresh mangoes and spices. I tried a piece of sugarcane from a stall; it was sticky and sweet, perfect for the heat. The tour moved at our pace, so we lingered at the sea wall, watching dhows bob in the harbor.
