The experience
Your driver picks you up from your hotel and takes you into Stone Town, where a licensed local guide walks you through the Old Slave Market and Anglican Cathedral, the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, Forodhani Gardens, and the Freddie Mercury House. The guide shares the history woven through the winding alleys: Arab, Persian, Indian and European layers built into the wooden doors and centuries-old stone. You move through the vibrant local markets filled with spices, fabrics and handcrafted goods, all within the UNESCO World Heritage Site's tight streets.
After Stone Town, a 30-minute drive through countryside dotted with coconut palms brings you to a working spice farm. A specialized guide takes you through cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, black pepper and turmeric. You see, touch and smell them growing. You taste exotic tropical fruits: jackfruit, star fruit, passion fruit. Then you sit down to a Swahili lunch prepared fresh at the farm: pilau rice with fish, coconut cassava and local curries made with the spices you've just explored, served with fresh fruit juices and tropical fruits picked from the same ground.
The day ends in Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, where official rangers lead a shared guided walk through the mahogany forest and mangrove boardwalks. Red Colobus monkeys, found only in Zanzibar, leap between the trees. You see exotic birds, butterflies and the swamp forest ecosystem before your driver takes you back to your hotel, arriving between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
